WHAT IS A Quonset Hut?
Quonset Huts get their name from the original manufacturing site in Quonset Point, RI, and the Native American word means “small, long place.” Engineered to be practical, lightweight yet sturdy, and convenient for the U.S. Navy to ship overseas, the design rendered easy-to-assemble prefabricated shelters during WWII. As many as 170,000 Q-Huts were fabricated, and the US military sold off surplus to the public once WWII ended. While many do remain standing throughout the US, it is not known whether what we now call Fair Market was a new build or navy surplus Q-Hut.
